River Stort Navigation
The River Stort Navigation runs 15 miles, from
Bishop's Stortford, to the south-west of Roydon, where it joins the
wider and deeper River Lee
at Feilde's Weir. This picturesque unspoilt river is teaming with wildlife
along its banks and surrounding counrtryside. Shallow and narrow in places,
it winds
itself through the undulating Hertfordshire countryside alongside the railway for
much of its journey. It drops all the way from Bishops Stortford on it's
westerly course to the River Lee, to the east of
Sawbridgeworth and the north of Harlow, and it is possible to navigate a 70ft narrow boat along
its entire length. There are several eating places, pubs and attractions
along its route. At the Bishops Stortford head of navigation there are
plans to provide more visitor moorings and possibly to run a trip boat in the
not too distant future.
