River Stort Navigation S A W B R I D G E W O R T H Post office, telephone, stores, garage and station. Attractive town with houses from 16th to 19th century, including many white clapboarded ones. The large 14th and 15th century church is rich in monuments and has a collection of 18th century gravestones of great elegance.
Sawbridgeworth Marsh (Essex Wildlife Trust, South Green Road, Fingringhoe, Colchester. 01206 729678 www.essexwt.org.uk. A 22 acre SSSI consisting of three distinct areas: 10 acres of waterlogged marsh; 6 acres of peaty meadow, and a low-lying willow plantation in the south. It contains rare plants such as marsh willowherb, marsh vulerian, marsh arrow-grass, southern marsh orchid and blunt-flowered rush. Ponds are rich with life, including the rare slender amber snail. There is also diverse bird and insect life. It is unusually most interesting in the spring and summer.
Pishiobury A castellated mansion rebuilt in 1782 by James Wyatt from an earlier Tudor house, it still retains some Tudor and Jacobean work inside. The park and lake were designed by Capability Brown and can be explored from an access point on the towpath, north side of the river where there are visitor moorings.
