  Return to Map

B I S H O P ' S    S T O R T F O R D

There is a post office, telephone, stores, garages and a station. A thriving market town with rail links to London and Stansted Airport. Shops are close to the 14 day visitor moorings at the head of navigation and 70ft boats can turn here - the best place is before the bridge where the river forks. There are several pubs in the vicinity. There is pump out and water here but no marina facilities.   St Michael's Church has a Norman font, which survived from an earlier church built on the same site.

Waytemore Castle Bridge Street. Only the foundations of the rectangular keep remain. What used to be the bailey is now a riverside pleasure garden.

Bishop's Stortford Museum South Road. Tel: 01279 651746.  Contains a collection illustrating Cecil Rhodes' life, particularly in relationship to his activities in Rhodesia. The old vicarage where Rhodes was born contains descriptive maps, pictures and documents devoted to him. There is also a local history section. Telephone for opening times.

Corn Exchange corner of Market Square and High Street. Built by Lewis Vulliamy, it has a neo-classical facade with Ionic columns and pediments.

Tourist Information Centre The Old Monastery, Windhill. Tel: 01279 655831. Friendly and helpful service. Open Mon-Fri 09.00 - 17.00, Sat 09.00 - 13.00. Closed Sun.
