Essex. Lying to the north of Beeleigh Lock, this quiet mill village has a church with Norman origins.

The Museum of Power Steam Pumping Station, Langford (01621 843183). Still under development, the main exhibit is a Lilleshall triple expansion steam engine and pumps built in 1933, which operated until 1963. Fine gardens, a museum walk, bird watching and tea rooms. Other engines are being installed, and a miniature railway system is being built. Telephone for details.

Beeleigh Abbey South of the River Chelmer, below Beeleigh Lock. Founded in 1180 for the Premonstratensian canons, only some 13th Century fragments of the Chapter House and the undercroft of the Dormitory survive, now adjoining a 16th Century house. Private.

Essex. Post Office, Telephone, Stores. To the West of the village, not far from Little Baddow Lock, stands St Mary the Virgin, a church with Norman origins and a 14th Century tower. It contains two fine tomb chests with oak effigies of a man and a woman, dating from around 1320. The carving of the woman is particularly good. Opposite the church stands the beautiful 14th or 15th Century timbered Little Baddow Hall (private). The village is almost a mile to the east.
