Tescos Maldon: Moorings

The navigation passes around the northern extremities of the town, so you will have to walk south in order to explore. This was a Roman port before the Saxons established their town, which rapidly grew and prospered, becoming at one time second in Essex only to Colchester. The preoccupation with salt-water bathing secured the town's prosperity during the 18th Century, when a saline baths was built next to the Salt Works established in 1777. To this day there is still a worldwide market for Maldon Sea Salt. The 13th Century All Saints Church is worth a look, since it has a unique (in Britain) triangular tower, and the Moot Hall, in the High Street and dating from around 1435, is also worth visiting. Since this is a seaside town, you cannot ignore Hythe Quay, where there are usually several Thames sailing barges to be seen. These craft were once engaged in a coastal trade to London, and today many are available for charter. Promenade Park, a little further east, oozes a salty charm. Opened in 1895, you can now enjoy crazy golf, play tennis, hire a pedalo or just sunbathe.
