Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation H E Y B R I D G E B A S I N
The completion of the new navigation in 1797, and the ability to receive sea-going craft in the basin, provided opportunities for local entrepreneurs to establish themselves here. As early as 1796 a sawyer, Richard Tovee, bought land by the basin, and Thomas Malden also purchased a plot to receive coal. A granary was built by the Navigation Company to store perishable goods, and service industries such as rope-makers and boatbuilders were also soon established. A pub and a brewery then followed. The settlement gradually expanded, with timber being imported for transhipment to Chelmsford, and even live eels were marketed here. Of course these enterprises are no more, but the basin is now discovering a new future, servicing the needs of visiting yachtsmen.
